We once had a WE Society

And we could have it again if we wanted to.

One of the problems I see with the political choices we have today in Aotea/New Zealand is that, at election time, we are asked to make a decision between two versions of neoliberalism.

It’s either the Right- wing version we are currently living under that hugely benefits the haves and wants to sell as much as possible of our country to overseas financial interests to make a buck,or the neoliberal light version of the Left who are more concerned about the well-being of the many and yet, when given the mandate for social change, as they were given in 2020, shied away from things like introducing a Capital Gains Tax. Why? Because at heart Labour still believe that government should not get involved in the marketplace.

When I talk about being on the Left of politics it is born of the experience of growing up in a country that was a WE society and very different from the ME society we have today.

In MIND THE GAP, a documentary I made some years ago, I wanted to explain in this in the simplest possible way, so with the help of cartoonist Tom Scott we came up with this three and half minute clip which I am going to make immediately free because I would really like you to share it with your social networks.

But I should offer a bit of a warning .

Whenever I have post things like this I get right winger shouting Communist!!! at me.

Not at all. We don’t have to have a communist dictatorship to be a WE focused society.

All that is required is to admit that the ideology of neoliberalism that Labour ushered in back in 1984 and put on steroids by National and now ACT and NZ First was a mistake, and that government to stop pandering to rich at the expense of the poor.
