I don’t know who superimposed this banner over the photo of a crowd outside the Evening Standard building in Wellington waiting for the results of the 1931 General Election, but it’s brilliant.
Why?
Because it reminds us that there was a time when we believed the purpose of government was to serve the needs of the many, not pander to the wealthy few.
When we believed that preserving our environment was more important than destroying it in the name of greed.
When the idea was to build a legacy for our children, and selling off chunks of our country to foreigners would have been tantamount to treason.
David Seymour’s Regulatory Standards Bill, if it is passed, will complete the commodification of our country and legalize the low wage exploitation of our people, because it puts private rights above the public good – which will give Big Money and Big Business enormous control over our lives.
If you want to save our country from the agents of greed I urge you to deluge the Select Committee with submissions before they close in just 2 days time at 1pm on the 23rd of June. It just takes a few minutes to register your objection. Here is the link.

I've put mine in and have been encouraging family and friends to do so as well. I also wrote to Winston Peters, thanking him for having opposed foreign takeover in the past and asking him to oppose the bill. I sent it to my local mp, Grant McCallum, as well and got a very strange response. I think if they allow this through at the second reading then another hikoi is called for. This cannot be allowed to continue.
