On 29 July 2024, an opinion piece by Eric Crampton, 'Putting a UBI to the test' was published in The Post. I thought there were inaccuracies in the article and forwarded to Guy Standing, co-founder of BIEN (Basic Income Earth Network). Guy wrote a rebuttal, and I contacted a Post journalist. I was informed that it was a Post policy not to publish an opposing article to an opinion piece by a regular Post contributor. However, Guy's article could be summarised and published as a Letter to the Editor. Guy agreed to this, permitting a summary to be made and published as a Letter to the Editor. I watched for the letter and did not see it published. Something appeared in The Press, but it was paywalled. The journalist informed Guy it had been published. I asked the journalist about the date published, but I received no reply. Guy has given permission for his rebuttal to be shared. If interested, email binzcontact@gmail.com, and I can forward both articles.
Thanks for those named NZ’rs recommendations Bryan. The J Goldberg fiasco yet another eye opener on the Trumpdom inner sanctum. With Omnishambles/lies/deceit/tyranny etc. all showing up for this. I would like to see Goldberg take legal action against the malignancy these people are perpetrating such as discrediting him. I watched a good interview with him and 5 other of his staff from the Atlanta on YouTube. Taking place at a book fair last weekg (from recollection) it was so good. These people attempted, also, to explain Trump got in etc.https://youtu.be/II23tRoT3IA?si=49hGqItHyc1Syv_L. Plus https://youtu.be/OjRI-wAyeOY?si=IInVyZd1FUwA8OLh
Surely, in any democratic country public interest journalism would be funded by govt, whether left or right wing? And surely such funding should be guaranteed to be untouchable i.e. not open to govt interference, regardless of how critical of the subject under discussion it may be? Isn't that right to freedom of speech the very foundation of democracy? And if is, then WHY exactly is any govt past or present jumping all over it in size 10 boots? Are they not in favour of democracy? While they certainly have the right to comment on any media programme, the business of amy democratic country's govt surely would not be to suppress such work. And if that happens then the question becomes why, what do they want to conceal...? Shouldn't that make us all extremely wary & deeply angry?
Rest assured Bryan, safe in the knowledge, that many (if not all) of us, appreciate all your efforts and 'know' from first hand experience, that your documentaries were accurate and ethical. I had always wondered, why you stopped making them; I had no idea, that funding has been abolished.
Thank you...I loved listening to it, and referring back to the written word. I think if it didn't have the subtitle about right-wing, it would make it more shareable...some will not read/listen because they will expect to not like what they read/hear...whereas, just a statement of how journalism is might get more hits?
I think a lot of these RW governments are putting the brakes on media simply by allowing oligarchs to own them. Look what's happening within our own media it's a disgrace to what is supposed to be a democracy. I've always loved documentaries because there about real life & I've never forgotten the one you made about neo Liberalism god I'm sick of that word & everything it means. Look what they did to Julian Assange because he outed the corruption at the time. It feels like where going forward & backward at the same time.
Your comment about being sickof the word neoliberalism made me smile Pauline. I remember when I was pitching TV3 to make Mind the Gap the Executive Producers said to me " You're not going to use the word 'neoliberalism' are you Bryan? No one will know what you mean?" I told her I would explain it and I did. And yes I am sick of that work too, but I will feel better when we are cured of it.
My concern is, although I understand why journalists have ended up here, the likes of Substack is just another 'for profit walled garden' that might or might not persist. I despair at those who've pour thousands of hours into creating the likes of Facebook, YouTube, content only to see it disappear when their accounts are deemed unworthy. Given the state of the world today it seems the most benign terms could trigger that.
Perhaps the real answer is a simple blog, hosted in a portable format (so not server/service specific) with a RSS feed for distribution. Maybe we had the answer back in the early 2000s? PS: My blog has its 21st birthday today :)
Goldberg did the right thing by protecting peoples lives, although he knew very well this was sensitive defense information and there would be a huge authoritarian and patriotic backlash. So why is USA striking Yemen? The Houti's are stopping weapons and supplies to Israel so Zionist can commit genocide. Funny how the journalists fail to report on Gaza
Excellent writing as ever Bryan . Thanks . I so appreciate your reasoned clear and straightforward explanation of the story .
A NZ example communicating with The Post.

Thank you Bryan.
Do we even have a public broadcasting service? Or a public media service?
“There are huge gaps in New Zealand’s public media landscape, that NZ On Air is structurally unable to fill. This weakens any claim to investing in public media.” https://betterpublicmedia.org.nz/about/what-public-media

💯 agree
Yes well done Bryan!

Brilliant, thanks Bryan. Aotearoa needs your truths, now more than ever.
Excellent! Thank you Bryan

Is Labour going to reinstate public broadcasting? Sadly, the old expression, "truth will out" can no longer be applied.
