The LA fires , Cyclone Gabriel, The Valencia floods, US hurricanes, Philippines typhoons and Amazon drought and last year was again the hottest since records begun.
The global average surface temperatures exceeded 1.5C above pre-industrial (1850-1900) levels — an internationally agreed warming threshold set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement — according to the United Nations' climate organisation.
The sea level is rising . The amount depends on where you live. The Globally averaged sea level has risen about 170 mm over the past 100 years (1920-2020)
The results of studies from a programme called NZ Searise released in 2022, indicate that for some parts of New Zealand, the apparent sea level rise will be twice as fast as previously predicted. This is because of the combined effect of absolute rise in sea level with gradual subsidence gradual of ground levels.
In some parts of Wellington, the land is subsiding by 3–4 mm per year, leading to an apparent 30 cm of sea-level rise in 18 years. By 2040, this is forecast to cause inundations every year that are equivalent to a 1-in-100 year event in 2020.
Twelve of the fifteen largest towns and cities in New Zealand are coastal with 65% of of our communities and major infrastructures lying within five kilometres of the sea.
In August 2022, the Ministry for the Environment published Aotearoa New Zealand's first National Adaptation Plan, covering the years 2022–2028. The plan includes a range of adaptation options: Avoid, Protect, Accommodate and Retreat.
And…what are we doing?
Next month the National/ACT/NZ First Coalition will put up the Crown Minerals Amendment Bill for final consideration in Parliament. When passed, the legislation will repeal the previous government’s ban on new offshore oil and gas exploration and hence promote one of the very causes of all this misery- hydrocarbon fuels.
Brilliant.

Yep, despite all evidence to the contrary, neoliberal trashing of the environment is top priority with this lot. All we can do is to keep putting in submissions against the insanity, and encouraging all New Zealanders to vote in two years' time. Somehow, voter apathy has to be overcome, and people need to realise that not voting is actually a vote for the political right, because the right's supporters always vote.
We're all failing on climate change! Only one party really cares about making structural change to halt our inexorable march into ecological oblivion and they are regularly vilified as a group of nutters. 14% of voters is a tragic reflection of trust in Green Party initiatives to halt this march. Far too many people interested in their next luxury item, new car, and holidays abroad to give a damn about their children's future on thus fragile planet
