Two words kept coming to mind while listening to this - cruel & uncaring. Our end of life law clearly needs changing & the sooner, the better.
Perhaps if there was profit in it for them, our govt might just do it.
I have to wonder what might happen, if overnight all private healthcare was ended - might we then see a vast improvement in our public health system...?
The work you both do is ‘profound’. Deepest gratitude for this. It is something I have no doubt I would be enquiring about shortly. It’s not that I have lost hope for living a longer life, it’s that I know with my heart condition I can’t imagine having a peaceful, painless death, thus I need to plan as best that I can. Likely after my February meeting with cardiologist there will be more information I can gain. To this point I haven’t asked the ‘big’ question. As Dr Gary said, Dr’s don’t know exactly. One looks such things up on the internet which gives rough statistics. I open up on this as I would like to see more discussion on this and encourage people to draw this to the attention of their politicians. There can be no doubt there are many, many, people struggling with severe health problems in their lonely homes who would like to make plans, in the event their suffering becomes far too much and whilst they still retain the strength to make plans. Looks like to get the law improved I need to add my voice.
Very sorry to hear of your situation Gloria . Knowledge is power however which is why I thought a conversation with Gary about a topic that some may find uncomfortable but it is important . As one Leither to another . "You tak care now hen!"
I have no intention of leaving our beautiful planet for many years yet Bryan. Alas we are all on the same road. As you say knowledge is power, love it. I’m not one to ‘put my noggin in the sand.’ Hehe
What a fantastic interview/chat - thank you both. The questions were brilliant and the responses illuminating. Gary is an amazing communicator and we are so lucky to have him in Aotearoa
Loved this interview we need somebody with Gary's intellect & knowledge as health minister it's crazy the kind of people that get that job. Simple Simon wouldn't have a clue.
