Please can we have Ganesh Nana in charge of this country's economy - he makes excellent sense.
And mentioning the social contract is surely bordering on heresy in these times under the iron grip of Neo liberalism, so he's not lacking in courage either.
We really have to change our society for the better - & soon, before yet more damage is done.
Why are people like him not our finance ministers! Long ago I said that mothers should be paid for mothering not because it added value to their work but showed society valued their work (or the parent who stayed at home) Now we have the dismissal of Pay equity claims. And we send our kids to "Early child education" used to be Kindy and playcenter not to educate kids but to get cheap labor for the benefits of others Like Seymour and the 8% he supports and wants to have all the power in society by his RSB
I agree the distribution of the benefits of productivity is critical - in my mind to a peaceful and well future for all. I miss the Productivity Commission. I worry about the externalities (is that the right word) of productivity gains eg climate and biodiversity.
I agree with Sue, we need Ganesh as Minister of Finance. I think Grant and Jacinda were exploring how to bring the results of productivity to all levels of our society. But this govt has erased all mention of well-being from government documents.
Great discussion! Sadly the idea that govt could set economic policy to benefit all is now just a dream. We want it but we can’t agree on what the social contract should say. I feel for the next generation who will have to pick up the pieces.
