I must say though, I’ve been shocked at the ageist, misogynist comments about Sylvia Wood, President of the National Party who appears in the photos of Luxon’s briefest of brief press conference after yesterday’s caucus meetings. Whatever your politics, and I’m not and never have been a National party supporter, I wonder what it is that drives people to make personal comments based on age, gender, appearance and have nothing to do with policies. Sylvia Wood is an accomplished woman who does not deserve these attacks. Such comments and attacks on her have been rife on social media in the past 24 hours and I’m shocked to find such responses to her as an older woman here on this particular substack. Perhaps in these heightened political tensions we can take a bit more time to think about what we really want to achieve and how best to achieve it?
"The problem" arises from (a) the flaw in MMP resulting in coalitions that force abandonment of the stated policies, and (b) which is just as well in this case, because National seems so in thrall to the selfish and uncaring lobbies that unchecked it could well bring the country down.
I am appalled at the media. Wall to wall coverage of a coup which is not a coup and media media for Luxcon the useless, but nothing on the 58 Full time Nurse Equivalents which have been employed by Health NZ since this government came to office, They boast of 2000 plus employed but this was the carry over from the last Labour government. Luxcon and crew have repealed just about everything Labour established for the betterment of the people and the economy. What a frightful mess as well as their frightful and frightening in fighting. Geeze!
This current National Party is all facade. Just like the buildings in an old horse opera there is nothing behind them. From the outset National has been squeezed, moulded, pummelled and shaped by Act and NZF. They have called the shots from the start. Chris Penk was a rising star in the party and has become the fall guy. The people who should be moved on were in the tight-faced rogues gallery behind Luxon at the so-called ‘press conference’.
The woman to Luxon’s left is Sylvia Wood, the National Party president. I am disappointed to see comments here on this thread which are less than complimentary about her. Personal attacks on someone who is simply doing her job are unnecessary.
Oh, let's hope so. Crack after crack. If I hear back to basics one time, I'll scream. It's such a ridiculous meaningless term. And they've also had three years to do it.
So agree Bryan. The description given him as ‘unauthentic’ is what I see Lux emits. He has a condition which doesn’t permit him to recognise another’s contradictory opinion including Megalomania. Seymour is a similar fit. Which is pretty disastrous for NZ alright.
Credit where its due though - those responsible for this deserve a wee pat on their backs. It gave this govt a shake up, which with an election in the wind, is no bad thing. They'll be a bit nervous & possibly a damn sight more careful about what they do & say & as a bonus, it has the lovely effect of showing them to be the greed based, incompetent & uncaring political party they are.
i think perhaps it might not be a bad idea if all those wanting to become politicians had to first pass a few tests on various things, starting with empathy - those lacking empathy, to be not permitted toi enter politics.
I would dearly love to talk to people who had previously worked under CEO Lightweight Luxon. I wonder if he commanded any respect then at all cos he certainly isn't as PM.
Brilliant Tui ad, Bryan!

Typical cruel comments when it comes to any kind of competition people go feral.
Hear, hear – although I'm not shocked that a woman is being picked on.
How can a party run a country when it can't even execute a coup?

Yes, I was dreading they would find someone there with acting skills who would create an illusion that they were human. Roll on November.
Thank you for the chuckle.

Would have helped if the names of people in the photo had been added below it. I'm definitely not a National supporter so had no idea who she was.

💯 stock up on popcorn 🍿🍿🍿

With friends like that, who needs enemies?
Who is the woman with the pearls? Luxon's mum?
