This is another piece that needs to be shareable. There are far too many older New Zealanders (yes, people my age, and I'm ashamed of them) who seem to believe the sun shines out of Winston Peters and who hang on his every word. It's time people were made fully aware of the ongoing, self-serving damage he has created for every government he's ever been part of. He's well past his use-by date and he and his party need to be removed from office at this election, to spare the country further pain and disruption. Perhaps his current acolytes should consider transferring their vote to the Opportunity party, who at least have the sense to be promoting a universal basic income - this might allay some of the fears about national superannuation that Peters delights in playing on.

Peter’s is everything that is wrong in NZ politics. He isn’t the only stumbling block to genuine progress, but is certainly the worst. He’s not as dangerous as Trump because he doesn’t have absolute power, yet he is more dangerous because he is a lot cleverer than Trump. His Peters First party rakes in the shallow thinkers and the conspiracy theorists and since Covid these numbers have risen. He is akin to a stage hypnotist and illusionist using sleight of thinking to, as Bryan says, make complexity seem not only simple but reasonable. Until he goes our political scene will wobble back and forth, vacillating with his whims and his rhetoric. I can’t wait to see him ousted and gone from our parliament.

At the risk of appearing ageist (I am old myself), there should be a retirement age set for politicians. Peters is an old school Muldoonist politician (divide and conquer). As an elder he helps set the tone in the house. However, Shane Jones is far more dangerous, as he has clearly been bought off by the lobbyists.

True! Add Shame Jones and you have a paracox…

It's simple. Do not vote for Peters or David Seymour or their hangers on. Listen carefully, it you can, to Peters and Seymour. Listen carefully to the nonsense, they do not make sense. They use a lot of words and say nothing. That is not communication. It is obfuscation.

So true! So astute! And so well written. Thanks Bryan

I commented on another post about the couple of times I saw Winston when I was in Wellington during the late 1980s. He appeared to LOVE the adulation. Once he was being almost carried out of a restaurant with an attractive woman under each arm - he seemed really, really drunk.

Since then, I've kept the thought in the back of my head that he's in politics because he couldn't sing.

Watched him once arrive 15 minutes late for a public meeting in Wgtn town hall. Every other political party rep had been seated on time and the meeting was well underway. Then in came Winston - no discreet entrance, no - instead the grand theatrical entrance - where he swept on stage and scooped up all the rapturous applause like a celebrity. At that point he lost my support. He enjoys the "baubles of office".

Agreed; this should be shared, & as widely as possible.

Winston is something of a chameleon & seems to change with the wind & veer towards whatever will grant him power - even if he opposed it last week. I think it's fair to say that a good many politicians tend to be untrustworthy - & that is especially true of Winston.

Bullseye analysis, Bryan! Winston Peter is about W.P., nobody and nothing else! Yes, he got us oldies the Gold Car. Yes, he made a great noise with the "Winebox Enquiry". But after that. . . . .. . . ?What. . . . . . . . ? Anything. . . . . . . ? Nothing but self-promoting noise!

In a conversation about the retirement age on RNZ yesterday Bernard Hickey was quite upfront with his opinion of Winston Peters.

Should the retirement age be raised to 72? https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/afternoons/audio/2019022917/should-the-retirement-age-be-raised-to-72

Yes a very good interview I think it was Michael Cullen's super fund that helped make our Super more sustainable. Muldoon wrecked it by stealing our super.

Winston is still relying on the elder grey brigade!

My Mum worked with Peter’s before he got into politics. She used to say he was an arrogant self serving arse back then, and before she passed away 18 years ago commented “ and nothing has changed today” .

I’m reading your post Bryan with Mum sitting on my shoulders , saying “ I told you so”!

Hahaha and now it’s timely I comment that my Dad, a Labour Party Gold badge awardee, used to say the same about Roger Douglas when Douglas was campaigning to be appointed to be a Labour candidant in west Auckland. “Watch that bastard !” he’d say, “ he’ll be the down fall of the Labour Party and our society” 🤦‍♀️Fark ! 💯‼️ to my parents . Love you both still and miss you …. Although rather pleased you are not here to see what’s going on in NZ politics today.

Love your analysis Bryan. I’ll say it again, Peters’ and his co-conspirators are masterly at deceit. His game this time up looks like - appears to be siding with the left so as to secure his left voters, after the election, return to the fold of the right and carryon - to further denigrate our parliament and NZ society.
