The Opportunity Party is promoting a version of a Universal Basic Income they are calling a Citizens Income.
They say “ it would replace many main benefits including Jobseeker, Student Allowance, Sole Parent Support and Supported Living allowance”
Putting aside the issue of how a universal basic income could be paid for (we’ll look at that next week) and simply looking at the principle of paying a universal benefit to everyone, regardless of whether they work or not, - should we change our benefit system and adopt the idea of a UBI ?
