Why is the Energy Minister ignoring expert advice on rising electricity prices?
The price of electricity has tripled since July 1st. As a result, Winstone Pulp Internation Ltd have announced they will be permanently closing their Karioi pulp mill and Tangiwai sawmill near Ohakune and 230 people will lose their jobs. The Japanese owned pulp plants at Whirinaki near Napier and in Auckland’s Penrose are closed temporarily and there is a real threat that other large manufacturing and meat processing operations may also soon close.
Our electricity crisis also creating a looming health crisis. As families on low incomes turn off the heating and huddle together in one room to keep warm, ‘flu bugs and other nasties are being readily transmitted, causing children to end up in hospital with respiratory illnesses.
