Sadly, Labour aren’t remotely interested in change. I too have emailed many times and a received bland meaningless replies or none at all.
Everyone needs to throw their weight behind the Greens and help counter the negative propaganda that they are subject to.
I won’t be easy, but unless we redistribute the wealth that is currently captured by a tiny minority and start using the government’s borrowing power to invest in our country we can say goodbye to democracy and any semblance of a civil society.
Awesome Bryan I wish our politicians on the left were all like the Mayor of New York. I wrote to labour about a wealth tax. They dont seem to have listened. Fortunately the Greens are. I am worried Labour are making the same mistake, not brave or courageous to bring about fast real change, that benefits us all. We have ro raise money to put right the damage done since the 90s and especially since this government 2023. Suggested looking at Prof Zucmans research. Years ago we were visiting family living in St Heliers. It was rubbish day. Walking round we realised there were heaps of empty or unlived in or part time lived in houses. How many actual empty houses are there?
Labour had a clear mandate for tax change in 2020 and they did nothing. Hipkins announced his "captains call" and discarded several policies he said we couldn't understand (maybe they didn't explain them adequately). Now, Labour seems to think if it just sits around long enough it will be re-elected. I have a dyed in the wool Labour voting friend who is expressing frustration - like me - a swinging voter. Maybe Nash identified the wrong party when he said someone was slacking?
As a tribal Labour man and socialist I voted Green for the first time after Ms Ardern put the kibosh on a CGT and have done so ever since. The NZ Labour Party no longer represents labour over capital, and hasn't since the first Lange government
Exactly so about the clear mandate. It continues to irritate me that so much good could have been done then, but the 'aspirational' mode that they talked about didn't actually translate into much at all.
It continues to baffle me why NZ's current ruling politicians are so afraid of offending the rich by asking them to pay their fair share. One can only assume that they are all in some kind of massive debt to the wealthy that paralyses them and prevents them from actually doing their job - the one that involves looking after their constituents rather than the 1% at the top who need no help at all. In the US it's painfully obvious that the government is run by big business, and that many politicians are blatantly corrupt. Perhaps it's time we had better insight into how much those same companies are running New Zealand.
Fascinating. If only (a) we had that sort of rooftop demographic and that sort of tax gathering structure; (b) a personable, ebullient, candidate; (c) an electoral structure that supports a winner-takes-all opportunity for one person to get in, unsullied by party/caucus cloudiness; (d) need I go on?
More like him & the world would be a better place. I suppose cloning him is out of the question, but surely we could do likewise here..or,perhaps that makes too much sense.
If any of our politicians would be likely to do the same, I suspect it would be the Green party. So no doubt I'll be voting Green again & wondering just how much longer it might take before the rest of our delightful politicians wake the hell up & see what's happening to our world, & get off their collective derriere's & set about fixing the mess we've made.
It must've taken an amazing team to have got Mamdani to be the Mayor of New York. And to introduce and action all the changes he campaigned on. I am in awe of what has been achieved so far.

They didn't take the public with them, instead they imposed stuff without adequate discussion - and the current lot are even worse!
